Surah Al-Anbiya — Verse 52

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us back to the moment when Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham, peace be upon him) addressed his father, Āzar, and his people with a tone of profound wisdom and gentle rebuke. He asked them: "What are these statues and carved images that you have made with your own hands, and to which you are so devotedly clinging, spending your days and nights in worship and service?"

The question was not asked out of ignorance, for Ibrāhīm knew exactly what they were. Rather, it was a rhetorical and thought-provoking question designed to awaken their minds and shake their hearts from the slumber of blind following. He wanted them to reflect: How can something created by human hands—shaped, carved, and fashioned by their own effort—be worthy of their worship, devotion, and complete submission? How can lifeless stone or wood, which cannot hear, see, or benefit anyone, be the object of such intense dedication?

The word "ʿākifūn" here highlights the depth of their attachment. They did not merely pass by these idols casually; they remained in their presence, devoted themselves to them, and built their entire religious life around them. Yet, despite this intense devotion, these statues were utterly powerless—unable to protect themselves, let alone their worshippers.

The same question Ibrāhīm posed to his people echoes through time to you today: What are these things you cling to, and why? Let your intellect lead you to the truth, just as it led the father of the prophets to the light of monotheism.
