Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Kūni" (كُونِي): "Be" – a divine command addressed directly to the fire, demonstrating Allah’s absolute authority over all creation.
- "Bardan" (بَرْدًا): "Coolness" – the opposite of heat, signifying the removal of the fire’s burning property.
- "Salāman" (سَلَامًا): "Safety" or "peace" – meaning the fire would cause no harm, pain, or injury to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
Explanation of the Verse:
When the arguments of Prophet Ibrahim’s people were utterly defeated and the truth stood clear before them, they resorted to brute force and tyranny. In their rage, they declared: "Burn him and avenge your gods, if you are truly supporters of them!" So they built a massive fire—so fierce that, as some narrations mention, birds could not fly over it due to the intensity of its heat—and cast Ibrahim into it.
But Allah, the Almighty, would not abandon His beloved servant. At the very moment Ibrahim was thrown into the flames, Allah addressed the fire with a direct and majestic command: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." And by His will, the fire obeyed. Its heat vanished, its burning power ceased, and it became a source of comfort and peace for the Prophet of Allah. Ibrahim emerged unharmed, untouched by any harm, as a living miracle that silenced every skeptic and demonstrated that no power on earth can overcome the will of the Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a profound reminder that Allah’s command is absolute and immediate. When He wills something, He merely says "Be," and it is. The fire that was created to burn could not harm Ibrahim because Allah commanded it otherwise. This teaches us that no matter how overwhelming the trials, enemies, or circumstances may appear, the believer who places their trust in Allah is under His divine protection. Just as the fire became cool and safe for Ibrahim, Allah can transform the most hostile situations into peace and safety for His righteous servants. Let this inspire you to strengthen your reliance on Allah, for He is the Turner of hearts, the Controller of all elements, and the Protector of those who sincerely worship Him. No tyrant’s fire, no worldly power, and no harsh circumstance can prevail against the one whom Allah shields. So hold firm to your faith, for the One who saved Ibrahim from the blazing fire is the same Lord who hears your prayers and watches over you today.
