Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zakariyya: Prophet Zachariah, peace be upon him, a descendant of Prophet David and the guardian of Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her.
- "Fardan" (فَرْدًا): Alone, single, without offspring or heir.
- "Al-Warithin" (الْوَارِثِينَ): The inheritors; those who remain after others pass away.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Messenger, the story of Allah's servant Zakariyya (Zachariah), peace be upon him—a story filled with humility, hope, and profound trust in Allah. When he grew old and his bones weakened, and his heart ached with the desire for a righteous child who would continue the mission of guiding Allah's servants, he turned to his Lord with a sincere and humble supplication. He called out: *"My Lord, do not leave me alone [without an heir]."* He did not ask for wealth or power, but for a child who would inherit his prophethood and carry the torch of faith after him. He pleaded: *"And You are the Best of inheritors"*—meaning, You are the One who remains forever, and Your mercy and wisdom surpass all. He acknowledged that even if no one remained after him, Allah Himself is the Eternal Inheritor of all creation, and His plan is always perfect.
This verse teaches us the beauty of turning to Allah in times of need, especially when all human means seem exhausted. Zakariyya was old, his wife was barren, yet he did not lose hope in Allah's infinite power. He understood that Allah is the Best of inheritors—the One who grants from where we least expect. His du'a was not merely a request for a child, but a request for a legacy of righteousness, a continuation of guidance, and a means to serve Allah's cause.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, look at how Zakariyya, peace be upon him, combined his need with praise. He did not complain or despair; he acknowledged Allah's perfection while presenting his need. This is the essence of du'a—to recognize our utter dependence on Allah while affirming His absolute sovereignty and generosity. When you feel alone, when you feel that no one can help you, remember that Allah is the Best of inheritors. He never abandons His sincere servants. He answers the call of the distressed, and He grants from His bounty what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived. So, turn to Him with a heart full of hope, and He will never disappoint you. And just as He blessed Zakariyya with Yahya (John the Baptist)—a son who was pure, compassionate, and devoted to Allah—He will bless you with what is best for you, in this life and the next. Let this story inspire you to never stop praying, never stop hoping, and never stop trusting in the One who is the Best of inheritors.
