Key Words and Phrases:

  • Afahasibtum (أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ): "Did you then think/suppose?" – a rhetorical question of rebuke and astonishment.
  • Abathan (عَبَثًا): "In vain" or "for play/amusement" – meaning without purpose, wisdom, or serious intent.
  • Turja'oon (تُرْجَعُونَ): "You will be returned" – referring to the return to Allah on the Day of Resurrection for judgment.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, addresses all of humanity with a question that strikes at the very heart of our existence: *"Did you then think that We created you in vain, and that you would not be returned to Us?"*

This is not a question seeking information; rather, it is a powerful rebuke, a wake-up call to those who live their lives as if they have no purpose. The word *"abathan"* (in vain) means to be created for no reason, with no commands to follow, no prohibitions to avoid, and no ultimate accountability. To think such a thing is to reduce the magnificent creation of the heavens and the earth, and the incredible complexity of the human being, to a mere accident or a fleeting game.

The verse challenges this flawed assumption on two fronts. First, it declares that creation is not a frivolous act. Allah did not create us for mere play or without a profound purpose. He created us to know Him, to worship Him, and to be tested in this life—a life that is a journey toward a greater, eternal reality. Second, it affirms the certainty of the Return. We will indeed be brought back to our Lord, not to be forgotten, but to be held accountable for every action, word, and intention. The One who created us from nothing has the absolute power to bring us back to life for the Final Reckoning.

This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that life is not a random series of events with no meaning. Every breath we take, every choice we make, carries weight. The believer understands that this world is a field for the Hereafter—a place to sow seeds of goodness, justice, and faith. To live as if there is no return is to live in a state of heedlessness, and this verse calls us out of that slumber.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart! Your existence is not a joke, and your life is not a meaningless journey. You are a creation of immense value, placed on this earth for a noble mission. The very fact that you can think, choose, and act is a testament to the purposefulness of your creation. Do not waste this precious gift on fleeting desires and temporary distractions. Instead, turn your face toward your Creator, fulfill His commands, and prepare for the day when you will stand before Him. That day is real, and it is nearer than you think. Let this knowledge fill you with hope and motivation, for the One who created you with purpose has also prepared for you a reward beyond your imagination—if you live your life in obedience to Him.

📜 Verse 113-117 — Al-Mu'minun

They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."
He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"
So exalted is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
