Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabb (Lord): The One who creates, sustains, and nurtures all of creation with perfect care.
- Ighfir (Forgive): To cover sins, erase them, and not hold the servant accountable for them.
- Irham (Have Mercy): To bestow kindness, compassion, and protection from harm.
- Khayr al-Rahimin (Best of the Merciful): The Most Merciful of all who show mercy — for His mercy is absolute, perfect, and unmatched.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a direct command from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and by extension to every believer: call upon your Lord, saying, *"My Lord, forgive me and have mercy upon me, for You are the Best of those who show mercy."*
The command to *ask for forgiveness* comes first, because forgiveness is the foundation — it cleanses the soul from the burden of sin and opens the door to divine mercy. Then comes the plea for *mercy*, which encompasses all goodness: guidance, provision, protection, and ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
The verse concludes with a profound declaration: *"You are the Best of the Merciful."* This is not merely a statement of praise — it is an acknowledgment that all mercy in this universe flows from Allah alone. Every act of kindness, every moment of compassion between people, is but a drop from His boundless ocean of mercy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that Allah's mercy is greater than a mother's love for her child — indeed, He is more merciful to His servant than the servant is to himself.
This supplication is a beautiful summary of the believer's relationship with Allah: we are weak, we err, and we are in constant need of His forgiveness and compassion. Yet we never despair, because we know that His mercy is the greatest of all. When we utter these words, we humble ourselves before Him, acknowledge our shortcomings, and place our complete trust in His infinite kindness.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear brother or sister, this verse is a treasure that the Prophet himself was commanded to recite — and he was the most beloved of creation to Allah. If the Prophet needed to ask for forgiveness and mercy, how much more do we? Make this du'a a constant companion in your daily life. Let it roll off your tongue in the morning and evening, in times of ease and hardship. For when you call upon the Best of the Merciful, know that He is nearer to you than your own jugular vein, and His response is guaranteed — either in this world, or stored for you as a treasure in the Hereafter. Never underestimate the power of this simple, profound supplication. It is a key that opens the gates of divine compassion, and a shield that protects you from the consequences of your own shortcomings. So raise your hands, humble your heart, and say with certainty: *"My Lord, forgive me and have mercy upon me, for You are the Best of the Merciful."*
