Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyāt (آيَاتٍ): Signs, proofs, clear evidences, and divine lessons.
- Mubtalīn (لَمُبْتَلِينَ): Testers, triers — meaning We are the Ones Who put people to trial and test.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) addresses the story of Prophet Nūḥ (Noah, peace be upon him) and his people, drawing our attention to the profound lessons embedded in that narrative. The verse states: "Indeed, in that are signs, and indeed, We were ever testing [mankind]."
The "that" refers to the entire account just mentioned — the deliverance of Nūḥ and the believers who boarded the ark, and the destruction of the disbelievers who rejected the message and were drowned in the flood. In this dramatic event, there are clear and undeniable signs of Allah's absolute power, His perfect justice, and His ability to grant victory to His righteous servants while bringing ruin upon those who persist in denial and arrogance.
These signs demonstrate that Allah's promise is true — He never abandons His prophets, and He always fulfills His word. The salvation of the believers and the punishment of the wicked are not random occurrences; they are deliberate acts of divine wisdom that reveal the reality of accountability and the consequences of one's choices.
Furthermore, Allah says, "and indeed, We were ever testing [mankind]." This means that sending prophets and delivering them with miracles, then observing how people respond — whether they believe or reject, obey or disobey — is part of Allah's ongoing test of humanity. The trial is not merely in worldly hardships; it is also in the very sending of messengers, the clarity of the signs, and the choice placed before every individual. Through this test, the sincere believer is distinguished from the hypocrite, the obedient from the defiant, and the patient from the impatient.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: your life is a test, and every moment is an opportunity to prove your faith. Just as Allah tested the people of Nūḥ with the call to monotheism and the promise of punishment, He tests you today with the message of the Qur’an and the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The signs of Allah are all around you — in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the succession of night and day, in your own breath and heartbeat. Do you see them? Do you respond with gratitude and obedience?
The story of Nūḥ is not merely history; it is a living reminder that Allah's help is near for those who believe and remain steadfast, and that His punishment is certain for those who turn away. So, embrace the test with patience and faith, for the One who saved Nūḥ and the believers from the flood is the same One who promises to guide and protect you when you sincerely turn to Him. Let this verse ignite in your heart a deep awareness that you are always under the watchful eye of the All-Knowing, All-Wise, and that your ultimate success lies in passing His test with sincerity and devotion.
