Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Basharayn (بَشَرَيْنِ): Two human beings, emphasizing their ordinary human nature with no divine or angelic attributes.
- Qawmuhuma (قَوْمُهُمَا): Their people — referring to the Children of Israel (Banu Isra'il).
- Abidoon (عَابِدُونَ): Literally "worshippers," but here it means submissive servants, obedient subjects, or those who are humbled and subjugated.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narrative of Prophet Musa (Moses) and his brother Harun (Aaron), peace be upon them, as they delivered the message of Allah to Pharaoh and his chiefs. When these two noble prophets came with clear signs and the call to monotheism, Pharaoh and his people responded with arrogance and disdain. They said: "Shall we believe in two human beings like ourselves, who have no superiority over us in wealth, status, or lineage? And their people — the Children of Israel — are our servants, humbled before us, working for us and submissive to our authority."
Their rejection was not based on any intellectual or rational grounds, but purely on pride, class prejudice, and tribal arrogance. They could not accept that someone from a people they considered inferior — the oppressed Israelites — could be chosen by Allah to guide them. They measured prophethood by worldly standards: wealth, power, and social standing, completely ignoring the true criterion, which is Allah's choice and the purity of the heart.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This scene from history carries a profound lesson for humanity. How often do we reject the truth simply because it comes from someone we consider "below" us? How often do we judge people by their social status, ethnicity, or wealth rather than by their character and message? Islam teaches us that true nobility lies in piety and righteousness, not in lineage or worldly possessions. Allah says: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" (Al-Hujurat: 13). The prophets themselves were often from humble backgrounds — shepherds, carpenters, and orphans — yet they were the best of creation. Let us purify our hearts from arrogance and learn to accept the truth wherever it comes from, for pride was the first sin ever committed, and it was the very sin that caused Pharaoh and his people to miss the greatest blessing: faith in Allah and His messengers. May Allah protect us from the arrogance of Pharaoh and grant us the humility of Musa and Harun. Ameen.
