Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rasoolahum" (their Messenger): Muhammad ﷺ, sent to them as a Messenger from Allah.
- "Munkiroon" (deniers/rejecters): Those who refuse to acknowledge the truth despite knowing it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to those who rejected the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, challenging the very foundation of their denial. Allah asks: "Or did they not recognize their Messenger, so they deny him?"
The question is not one of genuine uncertainty—it is a rebuke, a piercing inquiry designed to expose the illogical nature of their rejection. The people of Makkah knew Muhammad ﷺ intimately. For forty years before his prophethood, he lived among them as "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (the Truthful). They entrusted him with their valuables, sought his judgment in disputes, and acknowledged his impeccable character. When he called them to the worship of One God, they could not claim ignorance of his honesty or his noble lineage. Their denial was not born of unfamiliarity, but of arrogance, stubbornness, and a refusal to submit their pride to the truth.
This verse serves as a timeless lesson: the truth is often recognized in the heart, but rejected by the ego. The Quraysh knew he was truthful—yet they called him a magician. They knew he was honest—yet they accused him of lies. Their problem was never a lack of evidence; it was a lack of humility.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on this: how often do we deny what we know to be true because it demands a change in our lives? How often do we turn away from guidance because it challenges our comfort? The Prophet ﷺ was known for his perfect character before he ever received revelation—and that character was the greatest proof of his truthfulness. Allah says elsewhere: "And indeed, you are of a great moral character" (Al-Qalam: 4).
If you seek the truth sincerely, Allah will guide you to it. The doors of mercy are open, and the path of the Prophet ﷺ is illuminated by the light of revelation. Do not let pride or habit blind you to what your heart already knows. Embrace the truth, and you will find peace that surpasses all understanding. The Messenger ﷺ is not a stranger to humanity—he is the mercy sent to all worlds, and his message is the key to eternal success.
