Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jinnah (جِنَّة): Madness or insanity; a state of being possessed by jinn, as they falsely claimed.
- Al-Haqq (الْحَقِّ): The absolute truth — here referring to the Qur'an, the message of monotheism (Tawheed), and the upright religion brought by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- Kārihūn (كَارِهُونَ): Those who detest, abhor, or are averse to something — in this case, the truth itself.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the disbelievers had exhausted every argument against the Prophet (peace be upon him), they resorted to a desperate accusation: they claimed he was mad, possessed by jinn. But this was nothing more than a hollow slander born of stubbornness and pride. The truth is that he came to them with the clearest of truths — the Qur'an, a book of unmatched eloquence and wisdom, calling them to worship the One God, to justice, and to moral excellence. Yet the majority of them hated this truth, not because it was unclear or flawed, but because it clashed with their desires, their status, and their inherited falsehood. They loved their worldly interests more than they loved guidance, and so they rejected what their own hearts knew to be true.
This verse exposes the real disease: it was never a deficiency in the message or the messenger, but a sickness in their hearts — envy, arrogance, and a deep-seated aversion to anything that would disturb their comfort or challenge their authority. The truth was radiant, but they shut their eyes; it was sweet, but their tongues had grown bitter.
A Call to Reflection and Love for the Truth:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound reality. The Qur'an is not the words of a madman — it is the speech of the Lord of the worlds, a light that guides through the darkness of ignorance and confusion. How blessed are those who open their hearts to it, who welcome the truth even when it contradicts their whims! For the truth is not always easy; it may demand sacrifice, humility, and change. But those who embrace it find a peace that surpasses all else, and a success that no worldly gain can match.
Let us not be among those who hate the truth because it challenges us. Instead, let us be among those who love it, cherish it, and submit to it wholeheartedly — for in that submission lies our true freedom and eternal happiness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came not to burden you, but to rescue you. Will you not respond to the call of truth with an open heart?
