Word Meanings:
- Rabbi (My Lord): The address of a servant to his Creator, acknowledging His lordship and absolute authority.
- Fa lā taj'alnī (So do not place me): A supplication asking Allah not to include the supplicant among a particular group.
- Al-Qawm al-Ẓālimīn (The wrongdoing people): Those who persist in injustice, specifically here referring to the polytheists who reject the truth and oppress others through their disbelief and hostility.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of the supplication of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) after he despaired of his people's response to his call. He had spent centuries inviting them to monotheism, yet they persisted in their arrogance and oppression. When the divine decree of punishment was sealed against them, Noah turned to his Lord with this profound and heartfelt plea: "My Lord, do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
The meaning of this supplication is: If You are going to bring down Your punishment upon these oppressors while I am still among them, then save me from being caught in that punishment. Do not let me be counted among them or share their fate. Rather, remove me from their midst and protect me from Your wrath that will befall them.
This is not a request to escape responsibility, but rather a recognition that the punishment of Allah descends upon those who deserve it, and the believer, while calling his people to guidance, seeks to distance himself from their evil and its consequences. It reflects the believer's awareness that salvation lies in being with Allah, not with the oppressors, even if one lives among them physically.
The verse also carries a deeper spiritual lesson: the believer must always check his own state and fear being included among the wrongdoers, whether through action, silence, or association. It is a call to purify one's faith and to seek Allah's protection from being part of any group that incurs His displeasure.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This beautiful supplication teaches us a timeless lesson about the priority of faith over all other bonds. Prophet Noah, despite his deep love for his people and his long patience with them, knew that when the line is drawn between truth and falsehood, the believer must stand firmly on the side of Allah, even if it means separation from family, tribe, or nation. This verse inspires every Muslim to examine their associations and to pray constantly: "My Lord, keep me among the righteous, and do not let me be counted among those who wrong themselves and others." It reminds us that true success is not in numbers or worldly ties, but in being with Allah and His righteous servants. Let us make this du'a a part of our daily lives, asking Allah to protect us from being among the oppressors in this world and the next, and to grant us the company of the righteous in the highest gardens of Paradise.
