Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • نُرِيَكَ (nuriyaka): to show you, to make you witness.
  • مَا نَعِدُهُمْ (ma na'iduhum): what We have promised them (of punishment and torment).
  • لَقَادِرُونَ (laqadirun): truly able, fully capable.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse serves as a powerful reassurance to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to all believers. Allah is declaring: "And indeed, We are truly able to show you what We have promised them." The promise here refers to the punishment and divine retribution that was threatened against the disbelievers who rejected the message, mocked the believers, and persisted in their arrogance and wrongdoing.

Allah is emphasizing His absolute power and capability. He is not merely stating that He *can* do this, but He is affirming it with the emphatic particle "la" (لَ) — "We are *truly* and *certainly* able." This is a declaration of certainty, removing any doubt about Allah's capacity to fulfill His promises. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who brought life from nothing, who controls the affairs of all creation — is He not able to punish those who defy Him? Of course He is. Nothing is beyond His reach, and no one can escape His justice.

The verse also carries a profound lesson in patience and trust. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was being tested by the persistent rejection and hostility of his people. They would say, "When will this promise come to pass, if you are truthful?" This verse is Allah's answer: the promise is certain, and its fulfillment is entirely within His power. He showed the Prophet the punishment of the disbelievers at the Battle of Badr, where the leaders of disbelief were defeated and killed, and in many other instances thereafter. This was a visible, tangible fulfillment of the divine promise in this very world, before the greater punishment of the Hereafter.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a source of immense comfort for every believer who faces oppression, mockery, or injustice. When you see falsehood prevailing and truth being ridiculed, remember that Allah is watching, and He is fully capable of fulfilling His promises. No tyrant, no oppressor, no mocker of faith will escape His justice. The promise of Allah is true, and His power is absolute. So hold firm to your faith, be patient in adversity, and trust in the One who never breaks His word. The victory of truth is not a matter of "if" — it is a matter of "when," and Allah's timing is always perfect. Let this certainty fill your heart with peace and your soul with steadfastness, for the One who promises is the One who is able to deliver.
