Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qawm Nuh — The people of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him).
- Kadhdhabu al-Rusul — They denied the messengers; denying one messenger is tantamount to denying all, as they all brought the same core message of monotheism.
- Aghraqnahum — We drowned them (in the flood).
- Ayah — A sign, lesson, or warning for humanity.
- A'tadna — We have prepared (in the Hereafter).
- Adhaban Aliman — A painful, severe punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah Almighty draws our attention to the fate of the people of Noah (peace be upon him) as a timeless lesson for all of humanity. When they rejected Noah and accused him of falsehood, they were in reality rejecting all the messengers of Allah, because every prophet came with the same essential truth: the oneness of Allah and the call to worship Him alone. There is no distinction between the messengers in the core message they delivered — so whoever denies one has denied them all.
Allah drowned them in the great flood as a manifestation of His absolute power and justice. He made their destruction a visible, enduring sign for the nations that came after them — a warning that no one, regardless of their strength or numbers, can escape the consequence of persistent disbelief and oppression.
Furthermore, Allah declares that beyond the punishment they faced in this world, He has prepared for all wrongdoers — those who persist in injustice and denial — a painful torment in the Hereafter. This is a dual punishment: the immediate one in this life, and the greater, everlasting one in the life to come.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound message for every soul that reflects. It teaches us that Allah's justice is certain, and His mercy is equally vast for those who turn back to Him. The story of Noah's people is not merely history — it is a mirror for every generation. If a whole nation, despite its power and numbers, could be wiped away in an instant by the command of Allah, then no one should feel secure in their defiance.
Yet, in the same breath, this verse invites us to the door of repentance. The very fact that Allah mentions this punishment as a "sign" means He wants us to learn, to wake up, and to return to Him before it is too late. The door of mercy is open for those who believe, who correct their course, and who follow the guidance of the messengers. Do not let your heart be hardened like the hearts of those who came before — for the same Allah who drowned the disbelievers is the One who saved Noah and his followers. Choose to be among the saved, and you will find a peace that this world cannot give, and a reward that never ends.
