Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sadīq (صَدِيقٍ): A friend who is truthful in their friendship and sincere in their affection.
- Hamīm (حَمِيمٍ): A close, intimate, and special friend who is deeply concerned about you and stands by you in times of hardship — one who is warm-hearted and truly cares for your well-being.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Judgment, when the truth becomes fully clear and every soul is held accountable for its deeds, the wrongdoers will look around desperately for anyone who can help them. They will search for intercessors, advocates, or even a single soul who might speak on their behalf or show them mercy. But in that moment of utter need, they will find nothing.
The verse tells us that on that Day, there will be no sincere friend — no one whose love was genuine and whose bond was true — who can step forward to defend them or plead for their salvation. Even the closest of companions, those who were once inseparable in worldly life, will abandon one another. The Qur'an vividly portrays this scene elsewhere, where friends turn into enemies on that Day, except for the righteous who feared Allah.
This is a profound reminder of the reality of human relationships. Many people place their ultimate trust in friends, relatives, or influential figures, hoping that these bonds will save them in times of crisis. But on the Day when it matters most, all such worldly connections will prove utterly useless. Only faith, righteous deeds, and the mercy of Allah — attained through sincere repentance and following His guidance — will be of any benefit.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call from the Most Merciful. It invites you to reflect: Who is your true friend in this life? The one who stands by you in ease and in difficulty, who guides you toward what pleases Allah, and who reminds you of your ultimate return to Him — that is the friend worth keeping. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person follows the religion of their close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom they take as a friend."
Do not wait until the Day when no friend can help you. Now is the time to build a relationship with Allah, the One who never abandons His sincere servants. Turn to Him, seek His forgiveness, and surround yourself with righteous companions who will lead you to His pleasure. For on that Day, the only intercession that will benefit you is that which Allah permits — and the only true friend who will never forsake you is the One who created you, knows your struggles, and is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Call upon Him today, for He is always ready to respond.
