Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, lesson, or profound evidence that points to the truth.
  • Mu'minīn (مُؤْمِنِينَ): Believers — those who sincerely accept the truth with their hearts and act upon it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah draws our attention to the fate that befell the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) — a people who indulged in abominable acts of immorality that had never been committed before in human history. When they persisted in their wickedness and rejected the clear warnings of their prophet, Allah destroyed them with a punishment unlike any other: He turned their town upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.

This verse declares: "Indeed, in that [punishment] is a sign" — a powerful, unmistakable lesson for all who reflect. It demonstrates that Allah's justice is certain, that no sinner escapes His watch, and that His wrath descends upon those who defiantly transgress His limits. The destruction of Lot's people stands as a timeless warning that immorality, when embraced openly and unrepentantly, invites divine retribution.

Then Allah adds: "And most of them were not believers." This phrase carries a profound truth — the majority of that community chose disbelief and corruption over faith and righteousness. Only a small, righteous remnant followed Lot. This teaches us that truth is not measured by numbers; the people of truth may be few, but they are the ones who prevail in the end. It also serves as a sobering reminder that when a society's majority turns away from Allah, the consequences affect everyone — yet the believers are saved by His mercy.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and ponder: if a whole nation was destroyed for their sins, what does that say about the importance of turning to Allah today? This verse is not merely history — it is a living sign for you and me. It calls us to examine our own lives, to distance ourselves from immorality, and to cling to faith with sincerity. The door of repentance is open until the moment death arrives. Do not let your heart be among the majority that turns away — be among the believers who are few but beloved to Allah. The punishment of the past is a proof, and the mercy of Allah for those who believe and do good is an even greater promise. Embrace that promise today, and let this sign guide you to the straight path.
