Word Meanings:

  • Al-Musahharīn (الْمُسَحَّرِينَ): Those who have been severely affected by magic or sorcery, to the point that their intellect and reasoning have been impaired. It can also carry the connotation of being repeatedly bewitched or having one's mind overtaken by magic.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The people of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) responded to his call with arrogance and mockery. They said: "You, O Shu'ayb, are merely one of those who have been bewitched — your mind has been clouded by magic, and you have lost your sound judgment." They dismissed his prophethood by claiming he was just an ordinary human being like themselves, and that there was nothing special about him that would warrant Allah choosing him to deliver a divine message. They further insinuated that he was among the liars, and in their defiance, they challenged him: if he truly was a prophet, then let him bring down a piece of the sky upon them as punishment.

This was not merely an intellectual rejection — it was a deep-seated arrogance and stubbornness. They refused to reflect on the clear signs and the sound reasoning Shu'ayb presented. Instead, they resorted to personal attacks and baseless accusations, a pattern that has repeated throughout history whenever the truth was delivered by Allah's messengers. Their words reveal a heart sealed with pride, unwilling to submit to the truth, and a people who preferred the comfort of their falsehood over the light of guidance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How often do we see this same attitude today? When a person stands firm upon the truth, calling to righteousness and justice, some respond not with logic or evidence, but with ridicule and false accusations. They label the caller as confused, extreme, or deluded — simply because they cannot accept that someone would sincerely dedicate their life to Allah's cause.

Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder that the path of the prophets was never easy. They faced mockery, slander, and threats — yet they remained patient and steadfast. If you are upon the truth, do not be shaken by the words of those who reject it. Their accusations are often a reflection of their own inner turmoil, not a measure of your sincerity. Take comfort in knowing that Allah is fully aware of your efforts, and He will surely aid those who strive in His cause. The people of Shu'ayb eventually witnessed the truth of his warning — and so will every nation that rejects the messengers of Allah. The question is: will we be among those who listen and respond, or among those who persist until the punishment arrives?

📜 Verse 183-187 — Ash-Shu'ara

And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.
And fear He who created you and the former creation."
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.
So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."
