Word Meanings:

  • Attaqū (وَاتَّقُوا): Fear and be conscious of Allah, guarding yourselves against His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • Jibillah (الْجِبِلَّةَ): The creation, or the multitude of people. It refers to the nations and communities of the past.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) calls upon his people to fear Allah alone, the One who created them and brought them into existence from nothing. He reminds them that the same Creator also brought into being the earlier generations—the peoples of Nuh, Hud, Salih, and Lut, among others—who were stronger in power and might than they were. Yet, when those nations rejected the messengers and persisted in their wrongdoing, Allah's punishment overtook them and destroyed them completely.

The Prophet Shu'ayb is thus warning his people: If you continue in your defiance and corruption, then fear the punishment of the One who has power over you just as He had power over those before you. He is the Creator of all, and He is fully capable of destroying you as He destroyed the earlier nations. The word "jibillah" refers to the creation—the many generations that came before, who were also created by Allah and who also faced His justice.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Reflect on the fate of those who came before us. They were stronger, wealthier, and more numerous, yet when they disobeyed Allah, none of their power or wealth could protect them. So let us take heed, and let our fear of Allah be a driving force that leads us to righteousness, gratitude, and obedience to our Creator, who has no need of us but upon whom we are completely dependent.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to contemplate the greatness of your Creator. The One who created you from nothing, who shaped you and gave you life, is the same One who created every human being before you—from the first man, Adam, to the last person on earth. He knows your beginning and your end, and His knowledge encompasses all that you do. When you realize that this mighty Creator watches over you and that His punishment is severe for those who transgress, your heart will naturally incline toward obedience and away from sin. Let this awareness fill you with hope in His mercy and fear of His justice, and let it draw you closer to Him through sincere repentance and good deeds. For Allah is Most Merciful to those who turn to Him, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin you may have committed.

📜 Verse 182-186 — Ash-Shu'ara

And weigh with an even balance.
And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.
And fear He who created you and the former creation."
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.
