Word Meanings:

  • Bashar (بشر): A human being, a mortal man.
  • Mithluna (مثلنا): Like us, equal to us in nature and form.
  • Nathunnu (نظن): We think, we assume, we strongly suspect.
  • Kadhibin (الكاذبين): Those who lie, the liars.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse captures the arrogant and dismissive response of the people of Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) when he called them to worship Allah alone and to reform their corrupt practices. They said to him: "You are nothing but a human being like us — you eat, drink, and walk in the markets just as we do. What makes you think you are special enough to receive revelation from Allah? You have no superiority over us." They then added with suspicion and mockery: "And we strongly believe that you are among the liars — that you are fabricating this claim of prophethood."

Their words reveal a deep-seated arrogance and a refusal to accept the truth simply because it came from a man they considered their equal. They failed to recognize that Allah chooses messengers from among human beings precisely so that they can relate to their people and guide them with compassion and understanding. The messengers were never angels; they were humans who faced the same trials, ate the same food, and lived among their communities — yet they were distinguished by Allah's choice and divine support.

This attitude is not unique to Shu'ayb's people; it has been the response of many nations throughout history. When the truth is presented to those who are attached to their worldly status and false traditions, they often reject it by belittling the messenger rather than examining the message itself. They focus on the vessel rather than the treasure it carries.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound lesson: the value of a message is not determined by the social status of the one who delivers it, but by its truth and its source. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, sent messengers from among humanity to be living examples of how to live righteously in this world. If they had been angels, people would have said, "How can we follow someone who does not experience our struggles?" So Allah sent them as humans — eating, drinking, working, and facing hardships — to demonstrate that faith is attainable for every human being.

Do not let the simplicity of a person's appearance or background blind you to the truth they carry. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was also told by the disbelievers of his time: "What is this messenger who eats food and walks in the markets?" Yet Allah chose him to be the greatest of all creation. The beauty of Islam is that it elevates people by their piety and sincerity, not by their wealth, lineage, or outward form.

When you hear the call to truth, do not ask, "Who is this person?" Instead, ask, "Is this the truth?" And if it is, embrace it with an open heart. The messengers were all humans, but they were the best of humans — chosen by Allah to guide humanity out of darkness and into light. May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize the truth and the courage to follow it, and may He protect us from the arrogance that led the people of Shu'ayb to reject their prophet. Ameen.
