Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fa'lataka (فَعْلَتَكَ): Your deed/action — referring to the specific act of killing the Coptic man (Qibti) in Egypt.
  • Al-Kafirin (الْكَافِرِينَ): Here it means "those who deny/ingrate" — i.e., denying the favor and kindness of Pharaoh, not disbelief in Allah in this context.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Pharaoh, addressing Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), reminds him of the favor he had bestowed upon him. He says: "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not stay with us for many years of your life?" Then he recalls the incident when Musa, peace be upon him, struck and killed a Coptic man while defending one of his own people from the Children of Israel. Pharaoh says: "And you committed that deed of yours which you did" — meaning the killing of that man — "and you are among the ingrates" — i.e., you are one of those who deny my favor upon you and reject my lordship and my right to be obeyed.

Pharaoh's words carry a tone of reproach and arrogance. He tries to belittle Musa (peace be upon him) by reminding him of his past, attempting to make him feel indebted and guilty. However, the truth is that Musa's act was not a crime but an unintended accident — he struck the man to defend an oppressed person, and the man died as a result. Musa himself later acknowledged this, saying: "This is of the work of Satan" (28:15), and he sought forgiveness from his Lord.

Pharaoh's claim that Musa was "among the ingrates" is a distortion of reality. Musa (peace be upon him) was grateful to Allah alone, not to Pharaoh, for Pharaoh's "favor" was merely a means through which Allah's decree unfolded. Allah had destined Musa to be raised in Pharaoh's own house so that he would be protected and prepared for his great mission. Thus, the true favor belonged to Allah, not to Pharaoh.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the enemies of truth often try to use past favors or mistakes to undermine the call to righteousness. But a believer's strength lies in knowing that all favors come from Allah alone, and that past mistakes — when followed by sincere repentance — do not define one's future. Musa (peace be upon him) did not let Pharaoh's psychological manipulation shake his resolve. He stood firm in his mission, trusting that Allah's plan was greater than any human scheme.

Dear reader, when you call people to the truth, expect similar attempts to discredit you — reminders of your past, accusations of ingratitude, or belittling of your efforts. Do not be discouraged. Repent to Allah for any past errors, and move forward with confidence, knowing that Allah's support is with those who strive in His cause. The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done with sincerity and perseverance, regardless of the opposition you face.
