Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Walīdan" (وَلِيدًا): A young child, an infant, or a small boy who is still under the care and protection of others.
  • "Labithta" (وَلَبِثْتَ): You remained, stayed, or tarried.
  • "Min ʿumurika sinīn" (مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ): Several years of your life.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Pharaoh addresses Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) with a tone of arrogance and false favor, trying to remind him of the supposed kindness he had shown him. Pharaoh says: "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not stay among us for many years of your life?"

Pharaoh's intention here is to belittle Musa and to make him feel indebted, as if the years Musa spent in Pharaoh's household were a favor that should compel him to abandon his mission. He tries to use this as a rhetorical weapon, implying: "You owe us everything—your upbringing, your safety, your very life—so how dare you come to us with a message of monotheism and challenge our authority?"

However, the deeper reality is that this "favor" was part of Allah's divine plan. Allah had placed Musa in Pharaoh's own home as a baby, protected by His will, so that he would grow up strong and prepared for the great mission ahead. Pharaoh was merely a tool in Allah's design, unaware that the child he raised would one day confront him with the truth. This is a profound lesson: no matter how powerful or influential a tyrant may seem, Allah's plan always prevails, and His wisdom surpasses all human schemes.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless message for every believer. Pharaoh's words remind us of a common tactic used by oppressors throughout history—they try to use their worldly favors or power to silence the truth. But as Muslims, we must never be swayed by such attempts. The favors of Allah are far greater than any worldly kindness, and His command takes precedence over all else. When you stand for truth, expect opposition, but remember that Allah is with those who are patient and steadfast. Just as Musa was raised in the very house of his enemy and still emerged victorious by Allah's grace, so too can you overcome every obstacle when you place your trust in Allah. Let this verse inspire you to remain firm in your faith, knowing that no power on earth can stand against the will of the Almighty. And let it also remind you to be grateful to Allah alone, for every blessing you have comes from Him, and He is the One who truly raises you, protects you, and guides you to His path.
