Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-atba'ūhum – So they followed them / they caught up with them in pursuit.
- Mushriqīn – At the time of sunrise, when the sun’s light appeared and spread over the horizon.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid scene of relentless pursuit and divine timing. After Allah commanded Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) to depart with the Children of Israel by night, Pharaoh and his forces awoke to find them gone. Filled with rage and arrogance, Pharaoh mobilized his army and set out immediately, tracking the fleeing believers. The phrase "mushriqīn" tells us they caught up with them at the very moment the sun rose, its first rays illuminating the desert landscape. This was no casual chase—it was a determined, swift pursuit at dawn, closing the distance between the oppressor and the oppressed.
Yet, within this tense moment lies a profound lesson: the believers were cornered between the sea before them and the enemy behind them, with no apparent escape. But it was precisely at this point of utter human helplessness that Allah’s power would manifest in the most spectacular way—splitting the sea and drowning the tyrant. The sunrise here is not merely a time marker; it symbolizes the dawning of divine justice after the long, dark night of oppression. For the believers, it was the beginning of their salvation; for Pharaoh, it was the final sunrise of his worldly reign.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how Allah never abandons His righteous servants, even when the enemy closes in and hope seems lost. The Children of Israel had done nothing but trust in their Lord and obey His command, and He turned their moment of greatest fear into their greatest victory. This scene invites you to ask yourself: when you face trials, do you remember that the same Allah who split the sea is watching over you? The dawn that brought terror to Pharaoh brought freedom to Musa’s people—because their hearts were anchored in faith. Let this verse strengthen your certainty that no matter how powerful the oppressor or how dark the hour, Allah’s help arrives at the perfect time, often when you least expect it. Hold fast to your trust in Him, and you will witness how He turns your sunrises into testimonies of His mercy and might.
