Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Bal" (بَلْ): Here it means "rather" or "nay," used to turn away from the previous suggestion and introduce their actual excuse.
  • "Wajadnā" (وَجَدْنَا): We found, meaning we discovered by way of inheritance and tradition.
  • "Ābā'anā" (آبَاءَنَا): Our forefathers, ancestors, or previous generations.
  • "Kathālika yaf'alūn" (كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ): Doing exactly like that — i.e., worshipping these idols in the same manner.

The Interpretation:

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) confronted his people with the truth about their idols — asking them directly: "Do they hear you when you call upon them, or do they benefit you or harm you?" — they were struck with confusion and had no logical answer. They knew in their hearts that these statues were deaf, blind, and powerless. Yet, instead of surrendering to the truth, they retreated to their last and weakest defense: blind imitation of their ancestors.

They said: "Rather, we found our forefathers doing exactly this — worshipping these idols — and so we simply follow in their footsteps."

This was not an argument based on evidence or reason; it was an admission that they had no proof whatsoever. They did not claim that the idols heard them, helped them, or had any divine power. In fact, they implicitly acknowledged that the idols could neither hear, nor benefit, nor harm. Their only "justification" was that their fathers and grandfathers did the same, and so they chose to imitate them without question.

This response reveals a profound truth about human nature: when people are attached to falsehood, they often cling to tradition and ancestral custom as a shield against the light of truth. They mistake "what has always been done" for "what is right." But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, highlights this exchange in the Qur'an to teach us that truth is not determined by the majority, nor by the practices of our forefathers, but by revelation and sound reasoning.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. How often do we, too, justify our actions by saying, "This is how we found our parents and grandparents doing it"? Whether it is in matters of belief, worship, or daily conduct, blind following without seeking the truth can lead us astray — just as it led these people to worship stones that could neither hear nor help.

Islam honors you by inviting you to use your intellect. It does not ask you to abandon your heritage, but it calls you to examine it in the light of divine guidance. When the truth of the Qur'an reaches you, do not let the weight of tradition hold you back. The Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood alone against his entire society, yet he was firm because he knew that Allah's guidance is the ultimate truth.

Let this verse inspire you to be a seeker of truth, not a blind follower of custom. And if you find your family or community upon something that contradicts the Qur'an and the Sunnah, have the courage — like Ibrahim — to speak the truth with wisdom and kindness. For the one who leaves falsehood for the sake of Allah will never be disappointed, and Allah will never abandon those who sincerely seek His pleasure.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path, and may He make us among those who worship Him with knowledge, sincerity, and love.
