Word Meanings:

  • Yanfaʿūnakum (يَنفَعُونَكُمْ): They bring you benefit or advantage.
  • Yaḍurrūn (يَضُرُّون): They cause you harm or injury.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his powerful dialogue with his people, challenging their worship of idols. He asks them a profound and logical question: "Or do they benefit you or harm you?" — meaning, do these idols you worship have any power to bring you good if you serve them, or to afflict you with evil if you abandon them?

The question is rhetorical, designed to awaken their intellect and conscience. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is pointing out the absurdity of worshipping beings that are utterly powerless — they cannot hear, see, respond, benefit, or harm. They are mere objects, incapable of any action whatsoever. If they cannot even help themselves, how could they possibly help their worshippers?

This verse is part of a longer conversation where Ibrahim (peace be upon him) systematically dismantles the false logic of idol worship. He first asks whether the idols hear their calls, then whether they bring benefit or harm. The implied answer is clear: they do none of these things. So why worship them?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This beautiful verse invites every human being to reflect on the nature of true worship. Only Allah — the Creator, the Sustainer, the All-Powerful — possesses the ability to benefit and harm. He is the One who answers prayers, relieves distress, and grants blessings. Turning to anyone or anything else is not only futile but a great injustice to one's own soul.

Imagine the freedom and peace that comes when you place your trust solely in Allah. You no longer fear created things, for they hold no power over you except by His will. You no longer depend on statues, people, or material wealth, for all benefit and harm lie in His hands alone. This is the essence of true monotheism (Tawhid) — a pure, unshakable connection with the Almighty.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: What do you rely on? What do you fear? What do you love most? Direct all of that towards Allah, and you will find a peace that surpasses all understanding. As Ibrahim (peace be upon him) taught his people, and as the Quran teaches us today: only Allah deserves your worship, your hope, and your trust.
