Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Afara'aytum (أَفَرَأَيْتُم): "Have you then considered/seen?" — a rhetorical question inviting deep reflection and observation.
  • Ma kuntum ta'budun (مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ): "What you used to worship" — referring to the idols and false deities they served.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) addressed his people with a profound and thought-provoking question: "Have you truly reflected upon what you worship?" This was not a mere inquiry but an invitation to open their eyes and engage their minds. He urged them to look carefully at the idols they had been serving — lifeless stones, carved wood, or statues that could neither hear, see, benefit, nor harm anyone. These objects of worship were utterly powerless, yet his people and their forefathers had devoted themselves to them for generations.

Ibrahim's question was designed to shake them from blind imitation and inherited tradition. He wanted them to ask themselves: How can beings that cannot even protect themselves be worthy of worship? How can they be compared to the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all existence? By directing their attention to the reality of their idols, Ibrahim was planting the seed of reason and conscience, urging them to abandon falsehood and turn to the One True God — the Lord of all worlds, who alone deserves devotion, gratitude, and submission.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul: worship must be based on knowledge and conviction, not on blind custom or inherited error. It calls upon us to reflect on what we devote our hearts to — whether it is a stone, a desire, a status, or anything else — and to realize that true liberation lies in submitting only to Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of everything. Ibrahim's words echo across centuries, reminding us that the path of faith is the path of reason, sincerity, and ultimate peace.

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

77فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,
