Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ābā'ukum (آبَاؤُكُم): Your forefathers, ancestors.
  • Al-Aqdamūn (الأَقْدَمُونَ): The most ancient, the earliest generations who came before you.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his profound dialogue with his people, turning their attention to the idols they worshipped with a rhetorical question meant to awaken their intellect: "Are you truly conscious of what you have been worshipping—you and your most ancient forefathers?"

This verse strikes at the heart of blind imitation and inherited tradition. Ibrahim challenges his people to pause and reflect: these idols were not something new, nor were they a revelation from God. They were simply the legacy of their earliest ancestors—people just like them, who had no divine authority, no knowledge of the unseen, and no power to guide or protect. The question is not merely about the idols themselves, but about the very foundation of their belief system: Was it built on truth, or merely on the habit of following predecessors without question?

The beauty of this address lies in its gentle yet piercing logic. Ibrahim does not insult his people; he invites them to think. He reminds them that their worship was inherited from generations long gone—people who were themselves fallible, mortal, and ignorant of the true God. If those ancestors were wrong, why continue their error? If they had no proof, why cling to their path?

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every human being: do not accept beliefs merely because they are inherited. Islam calls you to use your God-given reason, to question, to seek the truth, and to follow what is evident and sound. Your salvation does not lie in the footsteps of your ancestors, but in the guidance of your Creator.

And note the mercy in Ibrahim's approach—he does not condemn his people harshly, but lovingly invites them to wake up from their slumber. He shows us that calling others to truth requires patience, wisdom, and a heart full of compassion, not arrogance or contempt.

So, dear reader, let this verse echo in your heart: Are you following truth because you have verified it, or merely because others before you did? The Qur'an calls you to a living faith—one that you embrace with your mind, your heart, and your will. That is the faith of Ibrahim, the friend of Allah, and it is the path to true peace and success in this life and the next.

74قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ
They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."
75قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,
76أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ
You and your ancient forefathers?
77فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.
