Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ma kuntum ta'budun" — the things you used to worship, i.e., the idols, false deities, or any beings you associated with Allah in worship.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, after the wrongdoers are gathered and the truth of their deeds becomes clear to them, they will be addressed with a severe and humiliating rebuke: "Where are those things you used to worship?" This question is not asked for information — Allah knows all — but rather to shame them and to make them fully realize the futility of their former beliefs. They had placed their hopes in these false deities, claiming that they would intercede for them or bring them closer to Allah. Now, at the moment of their greatest need, they are asked to call upon those very objects of worship. Will those idols answer them? Can they rescue them from the punishment that is now descending upon them? Of course not. The idols are lifeless stones, powerless beings, or even righteous people who themselves were never pleased with being worshipped. This question exposes the sheer emptiness of their devotion and the depth of their loss.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. Those who devoted their lives to something other than Allah — whether it was wealth, status, desires, or false gods — will one day stand before their Lord and be asked: "Where is what you worshipped?" And they will find nothing but regret. But you, O believer, have a treasure that never fails: your connection with Allah, the Living, the Self-Sustaining. He is always near, always hearing, always responding. When you worship Him alone, you are never left alone. On that Day, while others are being shamed and searching for their lost gods, you will be among those who are honored and welcomed with peace. So hold firmly to your faith, purify your worship for Allah alone, and let this verse be a reminder that no one and nothing deserves your heart's devotion except the One who created you, sustains you, and will receive you on the Day you return to Him.
