Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Min doonillah (مِن دُونِ الله): Other than Allah, i.e., the false deities and idols they worshipped.
  • Hal yansurūnakum (هَلْ يَنصُرُونَكُمْ): Do they help you? Meaning: Can they protect you from Allah’s punishment?
  • Aw yantasirūn (أَوْ يَنتَصِرُونَ): Or can they even help themselves? Meaning: Can they save themselves from the torment?

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, those who worshipped false gods and idols will be severely rebuked and humiliated. They will be asked a piercing, rhetorical question: "Where are those deities you used to worship besides Allah? The ones you relied upon for intercession and protection? Do they have any power to come to your aid now, to shield you from the punishment that awaits you? Or can they even save themselves from that same punishment?" The answer is an undeniable, crushing "No." These false gods—whether they were idols of stone, celestial bodies, angels, or righteous people who were wrongly deified—possess absolutely no power whatsoever. They cannot benefit anyone, nor can they even defend themselves. This question is not asked to seek information, but to expose the utter futility of their former worship and to deepen their regret and despair.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound and timeless lesson for every soul. It strips away all false hopes and reveals the absolute, unmatched sovereignty of Allah alone. How often do we, in our daily lives, place our trust in created things—wealth, status, people, or even our own abilities—as if they can truly protect us from harm or bring us benefit? On that Day, every false support will crumble to dust. But what a beautiful, comforting truth lies in the opposite direction: if you place your trust in Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, He will never abandon you. He is the One who answers the call of the distressed, who protects His sincere servants, and who grants them victory in this world and the next. So, turn your heart to Him alone, for He is the only true Helper, the only One who can save you from every hardship and grant you success in the eternal life. Let this verse be a reminder to purify your worship and your reliance, making it purely for Allah, and you will find a peace and security that nothing in this world can ever provide.

📜 Verse 91-95 — Ash-Shu'ara

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,
And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship
Other than Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?"
So they will be overturned into Hellfire, they and the deviators
And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.
