Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَسَاطِيرُ (Asateer): Legends, myths, or tales of the ancients—fables and falsehoods that were written down and passed on without any real basis in truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah tells us about the response of the disbelievers when they were called to believe in the Resurrection and the Day of Judgment. They said: "We have indeed been promised this—that we will be raised again after death—both we and our forefathers before us, and we have seen no sign of it coming true. This promise is nothing but the legends of the ancients, stories they wrote down and fabricated, with no reality behind them."
Their words reveal a deep arrogance and denial of the truth. They dismissed the clear message of the prophets as mere myths, refusing to reflect on the signs of Allah’s power all around them—the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, and their own very existence. They clung to the words of their ancestors, thinking that because their forefathers had rejected the truth, they too must reject it, without ever examining the evidence with an open heart and mind.
This attitude is a warning for all of us: do not blindly follow the ways of those before us, especially when the truth is clear. The Resurrection is a certainty that Allah has promised, and His promise is true. The disbelievers of old said the same words, and they were destroyed, while the believers who trusted in Allah’s promise were saved.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder to you. The Qur’an is not a book of legends or myths—it is the living word of Allah, full of wisdom and guidance. The promise of the Hereafter is not a fairy tale; it is a reality that will surely come to pass. When you look at the universe around you, you see the signs of a Creator who is capable of all things. He who created you from nothing is surely able to bring you back to life after death. So do not be like those who closed their eyes to the truth and said, "These are only tales of the ancients." Instead, open your heart to the light of faith, and you will find peace in the certainty that Allah’s promise is true, and that your ultimate success lies in pleasing Him. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who reflect, believe, and act righteously, for they are the ones who will prosper in this life and the next.
