Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ" — The word of punishment and divine decree was justly fulfilled against them.
- "أَغْوَيْنَا" — We led them astray; we called them to misguidance and they followed.
- "غَوَيْنَا" — We ourselves went astray; we deviated from the truth.
- "تَبَرَّأْنَا إِلَيْكَ" — We declare our innocence before You; we disown them and their deeds.
- "مَا كَانُوا إِيَّانَا يَعْبُدُونَ" — They were not worshipping us; rather, they were worshipping their own desires and the devils who deceived them.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the truth becomes crystal clear and every soul reaps what it has sown, the leaders of disbelief — those upon whom the word of punishment has been justly decreed — will speak in a desperate attempt to absolve themselves. They will say: "Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray just as we ourselves went astray."
But notice the profound honesty in their confession: they admit that they did not force their followers into misguidance. They merely called to it, and the followers chose to respond. The leaders will then declare: "We disown them before You." They will sever all ties of loyalty and alliance with their followers, exposing the fragility of the bonds that were built upon falsehood in this worldly life.
Then comes their final, revealing statement: "They were not worshipping us." This is a stark admission that their followers were not truly devoted to them as persons, but rather to the false ideas, desires, and demonic whispers they propagated. The followers worshipped their own whims and the devils who adorned misguidance in attractive forms.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every human being: the leaders of falsehood will abandon their followers at the moment of greatest need. The alliances built on sin and deviation will crumble into mutual blame and disavowal. How different is this from the blessed path of faith, where the righteous intercede for one another by Allah's permission, and where bonds of love for Allah's sake endure beyond the grave!
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this scene from the Hereafter awaken your heart. The leaders of misguidance — however powerful, eloquent, or influential they may appear in this world — will be utterly powerless on that Day. They cannot even save themselves, let alone those who followed them.
So choose your companions and your leaders wisely. Follow those who call you to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, who remind you of Allah, and who lead you toward the path of eternal success. Do not let the glitter of this world deceive you, for every soul will stand alone before its Lord, and only sincere faith and righteous deeds will intercede for you.
And know that Allah, the Most Merciful, has opened the door of repentance wide. Whoever returns to Him before death arrives will find Him Forgiving and Compassionate. Do not wait until the Day when excuses are of no avail — turn to your Lord now, and taste the sweetness of faith that will illuminate your heart in this life and the next.
