Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kullu nafsin (كُلُّ نَفْسٍ): Every soul, meaning every living being without exception.
  • Dhā’iqatu al-mawt (ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ): Tasting death, i.e., experiencing its bitterness and reality, just as one tastes the flavor of something.
  • Thumma (ثُمَّ): Then, indicating sequence and emphasis.
  • Ilaynā turja‘ūn (إِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ): To Us you will be returned, meaning brought back to Allah alone for reckoning and recompense.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse serves as a profound reminder and a source of encouragement, especially for those facing hardship or fear—particularly the believers who were urged to migrate for the sake of their faith. Allah addresses them directly: Do not let the fear of death prevent you from doing what is right, for death is inevitable for every soul. Every living being, regardless of status, power, or location, will inevitably taste death. No one can escape it, whether they stay in a land of oppression or move to a place of safety. The certainty of death is universal and inescapable.

The verse then directs our attention to what comes after death: "Then to Us you will be returned." This return is not merely a physical resurrection but a return to Allah alone for judgment. On that Day, every deed—good or bad, hidden or public—will be brought to account. The One who created you, who knows your intentions and your struggles, will reward you with perfect justice and boundless mercy.

The deeper message here is one of hope and courage. Since death is certain wherever you are, why let the fear of it hold you back from obeying Allah and living a life of faith? The believer is not someone who clings to this fleeting world out of fear; rather, they embrace the truth, knowing that their ultimate destination is with their Lord. Migration, sacrifice, and patience in the face of trials are all part of this journey—and the reward with Allah is far greater than any temporary comfort or safety.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. You will leave this world, whether today or after many years—that is an absolute truth. So ask yourself: What have you prepared for the moment you stand before your Creator? This life is but a fleeting moment, a test, and a passage. Do not be deceived by its glitter or paralyzed by its fears. Live with purpose, act with sincerity, and place your trust in Allah. For the One who will return you to Himself is the Most Merciful, the Most Just—and His reward for those who strive in His path is beyond anything your eyes have seen or your heart can imagine. Embrace the truth now, and let every step you take be a step toward His pleasure.

📜 Verse 55-59 — Al-'Ankabut

On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."
O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers
Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
