Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Muttum (مُتُّمْ): You die a natural death, whether in your beds or in any other circumstance.
- Qutiltum (قُتِلْتُمْ): You are killed, whether in battle or by any other means.
- Tuhsharūn (تُحْشَرُونَ): You will be gathered and assembled before Allah on the Day of Resurrection.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses every believer, reassuring them that the manner of their departure from this world—whether through a natural death at home or through being slain in the path of Allah on the battlefield—makes no difference in the final outcome. In all cases, the destination is the same: you will be gathered before Allah alone, the Lord of all creation.
Death is inevitable; it is the one certainty that no soul can escape. Whether it comes to you while you are resting peacefully on your bed or while you are fighting courageously in the cause of truth, the end result is identical—you will return to your Creator. Allah does not ask how you left this world, but rather how you lived in it. The gathering on the Day of Judgment is not a matter of chance or choice; it is an absolute certainty that every soul will face. On that Day, Allah will settle all accounts with perfect justice, rewarding every good deed and holding every soul accountable for its actions.
This verse carries a profound message of hope and motivation: do not fear death, and do not dread being killed in the path of righteousness. What should truly concern you is how you will stand before your Lord. The believer who lives in obedience to Allah and dies upon faith—whether in comfort or in hardship—has succeeded. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that whoever sincerely seeks martyrdom, Allah will raise him to the ranks of the martyrs even if he dies on his bed.
So, dear Muslim, let this verse fill your heart with tranquility. Your life and your death are both in the hands of Allah, and your ultimate return is to Him. Make every moment of your life count for what pleases Him, and you will have no fear of what comes after death. The grave is not the end; it is merely a station on the journey to your true home. And what a beautiful home it is for those who strive in the way of Allah!
