Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yahdi (يَهْدِي): To guide, to grant success and divine direction toward the truth.
- Kafarū (كَفَرُوا): They disbelieved, rejected, or covered the truth after having known it.
- Bayyināt (الْبَيِّنَاتُ): Clear proofs, evident signs, and unequivocal evidences.
- Al-Ẓālimīn (الظَّالِمِينَ): The wrongdoers—those who deliberately place things in the wrong position, choosing falsehood over truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a rhetorical question of profound astonishment and denial: How could Allah possibly guide a people who, after having sincerely believed and openly testified that the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) is true—and after clear proofs and undeniable evidences of his prophethood had reached them—then turned back to disbelief? The question is not a request for information but an emphatic declaration that such guidance is utterly incompatible with their deliberate rejection.
The verse highlights the gravity of their crime: they did not disbelieve out of ignorance or lack of evidence. On the contrary, they had believed, they had witnessed the truth with their own hearts and tongues, and the divine signs—the Qur'an, the miracles, and the unassailable arguments—had come to them. Yet, they chose to abandon all of that and revert to kufr. This is not the error of one who is confused; it is the stubbornness of one who knows the truth and turns away from it.
Then the verse concludes with a decisive principle: Allah does not guide the people who are wrongdoers—those who, by their own choice, replace faith with disbelief and light with darkness. Their wrongdoing is not a minor slip but a deliberate inversion of truth, placing kufr where iman should be. Such people have sealed their own fate by rejecting the very guidance that was placed before them.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul. It teaches us that guidance is a divine gift, but it is granted to those who sincerely seek it and act upon it. The door of Allah's mercy is wide open for the repentant and the sincere, but it is closed to those who, after knowing the truth, mock it and turn away. Let this be a reminder to hold firmly to your faith, to cherish the light of guidance once it has entered your heart, and to never trade it for the fleeting illusions of this world. Allah's love for His servants is immense, and His guidance is the greatest treasure—so guard it with your life, and let every step you take be a step toward His pleasure.
