Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Shurakā’ihim (شُرَكَائِهِمْ): Their partners — the false deities, idols, or beings they associated with Allah in worship during their worldly life.
- Shufa‘ā’ (شُفَعَاءُ): Intercessors — those who would plead on their behalf or rescue them from punishment.
- Kāfirīn (كَافِرِينَ): Deniers, disbelievers — here meaning they disown and reject their false gods.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the truth becomes utterly clear and every soul faces the consequences of its deeds, the polytheists will find themselves utterly abandoned. The very beings they worshipped alongside Allah — whether idols, angels, prophets, or other humans — will not intercede for them. No one will step forward to rescue them from the divine punishment they have earned.
Worse still, a complete reversal will take place: those who worshipped will disown their false gods, and the false gods themselves will disown their worshippers. Each side will declare its innocence of the other. The idols and false deities will deny any partnership with Allah, and the worshippers will realize how foolishly they placed their hopes in powerless beings.
This verse highlights a profound truth: intercession belongs solely to Allah. No one can shield another from His justice, and no false deity can offer protection. On that Day, every false bond of loyalty and worship will dissolve into mutual rejection and regret. The polytheists will see that their entire belief system was built on nothing — and that their so-called partners have become their accusers.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every human being. It asks us: where do we place our trust? Whom do we turn to in times of need? The idols of today are not only stones and statues — they can be wealth, status, power, or even other people whom we elevate to a position that belongs only to Allah.
The Qur’an lovingly warns us: do not wait until that Day to discover that your hopes were misplaced. Turn now to the One whose hand holds everything, whose mercy encompasses all, and whose intercession is granted only by His permission. Islam calls you to a life of true freedom — freedom from the chains of false dependence, and a direct connection with your Creator. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein, and He answers the call of every sincere heart.
Do not let the Day of mutual disownment be your reality. Let today be the day you return to Allah, the only One who will never abandon you — in this life or the next.
