Key Words and Their Meanings:
- نُمَتِّعُهُمْ (Numatti'uhum): We grant them enjoyment or temporary pleasure.
- قَلِيلًا (Qalilan): A little while — a short, fleeting period.
- نَضْطَرُّهُمْ (Nadhtarruhum): We compel them, drive them forcibly, or lead them inevitably.
- عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ ('Adhabin Ghaliz): A harsh, severe, and overwhelming punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) speaks about those who turn away from His signs and persist in disbelief and sin. He says: "We grant them enjoyment for a little while" — meaning that in this worldly life, which is temporary and perishable, We give them respite and let them taste its fleeting pleasures, wealth, health, and desires. This is not a sign of Our pleasure or approval; rather, it is a period of grace and a test, lasting only until the end of their appointed term.
Then, Allah says: "Then We will compel them to a harsh punishment" — meaning that after this short-lived enjoyment, on the Day of Resurrection, We will drive them forcibly and inevitably to a severe and terrible chastisement: the blazing Fire of Hell. There will be no escape, no intercessor to save them, and no way to avoid it. The word "compel" (nadhtarruhum) emphasizes that they will be led there against their will, with no choice or power to resist, just as they had no choice in the arrival of their death.
This verse serves as a profound reminder of the reality of this world: its pleasures are momentary, while the consequences of our actions are eternal. The enjoyment of the disbelievers in this life is like a mirage — it seems real but quickly vanishes, leaving behind only regret and the harsh reality of punishment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart! Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not hasten punishment for His servants; instead, He gives them time — time to reflect, to repent, and to return to Him. The "little enjoyment" of this world is but a blink of an eye compared to the everlasting life to come. Do not be deceived by the temporary pleasures of wealth, status, or desires, for they will surely fade away.
Islam invites you to a life of purpose and peace, where your actions in this short journey determine your eternal destiny. The Quran is a light that guides you away from the path of ruin and toward the gardens of eternal bliss. Seize this moment — before the appointed hour arrives — to turn to your Lord, seek His forgiveness, and embrace the beauty of faith. For the One who grants you every breath and every blessing is the same One who will hold you to account. Let your heart soften today, and let your soul find rest in submission to Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
