Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Ghaniyy (الْغَنِيُّ): The Self-Sufficient, the One who is free of all needs and wants, while all creation stands in absolute need of Him.
- Al-Hameed (الْحَمِيدُ): The Praiseworthy, the One who is deserving of all praise and gratitude in every circumstance, in this world and the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
To Allah alone belongs everything that exists in the heavens and the earth — as creation, as possession, and as dominion. Every atom, every being, and every force in the universe is under His absolute control and authority. Nothing lies outside His kingdom, and no one shares in His sovereignty. Because He alone is the Owner and Sustainer of all things, He alone deserves to be worshipped — no other deity, idol, or power has any right to your devotion.
Indeed, Allah is Al-Ghaniyy — completely free of any need for His creation. He does not require your worship for His benefit, nor does your obedience add anything to His glory, nor does your sin diminish His perfection. He is rich beyond measure, and all of creation depends entirely upon Him for its existence and survival. Yet, despite His absolute self-sufficiency, He is Al-Hameed — the Praiseworthy — deserving of all praise and gratitude. His perfection, His mercy, His justice, and His countless blessings upon you make Him worthy of your love, your thanks, and your worship. He is praised for His essence, His attributes, and His actions — in this life and forever in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: everything you see around you — the sky above, the earth beneath your feet, your own body and soul — all of it belongs to Allah. He is the One who sustains you every moment, yet He needs nothing from you. When you pray, when you give charity, when you seek His forgiveness — you are not doing Him a favor; you are doing yourself a favor. He is rich, and you are the one in need. So why not turn to the One who is truly worthy of your worship? Why not place your trust in the Self-Sufficient who never fails, and praise the Praiseworthy who has blessed you beyond measure? His door is always open, His mercy is always flowing, and His love for you is greater than you can imagine. Come to Him, and you will find peace that this world can never give you.
