Key Words and Phrases:
- ʿĀhadū Allāh (عَاهَدُوا الله): They made a covenant with Allah — a solemn pledge and promise.
- Lā yuwallūna al-adbār (لَا يُوَلُّونَ الْأَدْبَارَ): They would not turn their backs — meaning they would not flee from battle or retreat in cowardice.
- Masʾūlan (مَسْئُولًا): Will be asked about, held accountable, and called to answer for it.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the reality of the hypocrites during the Battle of the Trench (Al-Ahzab), when the Muslims were besieged in Madinah by a massive confederate army. Before this trial, these very people had made a solemn covenant with Allah — some after the Battle of Uhud, when they had tasted defeat and regretted their flight — promising that if they were ever given another chance to fight, they would stand firm and never turn their backs in retreat. They swore they would not flee from the enemy, no matter how terrifying the scene.
But when the moment of truth arrived, and the armies gathered, and the hearts reached the throats, they broke their promise. They abandoned their posts, made excuses, and sought permission to leave — exposing the emptiness of their faith and the weakness of their resolve.
Then Allah reminds them — and all of humanity — of a profound truth: the covenant with Allah is not a casual word that can be tossed aside. It is a binding agreement that will be asked about on the Day of Judgment. Every promise made to Allah — whether to obey, to fight, to be patient, or to remain steadfast — is recorded, and the one who makes it will be held accountable for it. No one escapes this questioning.
This verse carries a stern warning: be careful with what you promise Allah, for He takes your word seriously. And if you break your covenant, know that you will face the consequences — both in this world through humiliation and loss, and in the Hereafter through accountability and reckoning.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is not merely a historical report about the hypocrites of the past — it is a mirror for every soul. How many times have we promised Allah that we would change? How many times have we said, "If You grant me this, I will pray, I will give charity, I will stop sinning"? And when Allah fulfilled His part, did we fulfill ours?
Allah is Al-Karim (The Most Generous) — He never breaks His promises to us. He feeds us, protects us, forgives us, and opens doors for us. But we, in our weakness, often forget what we pledged. This verse calls us to be people of honor — people who keep their word with their Lord. For the believer, a promise to Allah is sacred, and fulfilling it is a sign of true faith.
Let this be a moment of sincere repentance. Renew your covenant with Allah today — not with a tongue that forgets, but with a heart that is determined. And know that Allah loves those who are true to their promises, and He will honor them with His support in this life and His Paradise in the next.
