Surah Fatir — Verse 1

Tafsir (Explanation):

All praise and gratitude belong to Allah alone — praise for His perfect attributes, His countless blessings both visible and hidden, and His supreme majesty. He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One who created them from absolute nothingness, without any prior blueprint or model. This opening verse establishes the foundation of our faith: that Allah is the sole Creator, and therefore worthy of all worship and thanks.

Among the magnificent displays of His power and wisdom is His appointment of angels as messengers. These are noble, honored beings whom Allah has chosen to carry His commands and revelations. Some of them deliver the divine message to His prophets, while others execute His decrees throughout the universe. To enable them to fulfill these sacred duties, Allah has endowed them with wings — some having two wings, some three, and some four — with which they fly swiftly to accomplish whatever their Lord commands. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Jibril (Gabriel) as having six hundred wings, filling the horizon from east to west — a testament to the immense power Allah grants His creation.

Then Allah declares: "He increases in creation what He wills." This is a profound statement of His absolute freedom and sovereignty. He adds to His creatures whatever He chooses — be it more wings for His angels, greater strength, beauty, knowledge, or any other quality. No one can question His decisions, and no one can restrict His power. He gives to whom He wills and withholds from whom He wills, and His wisdom is beyond our full comprehension.

The verse concludes with the powerful affirmation: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." Nothing is difficult for Him, nothing escapes His ability, and no task is beyond His reach. Whether it is creating vast heavens, fashioning angels with magnificent forms, or increasing His creation in ways we cannot imagine — all of this is effortless for Him.

Reflection and Daʿwah:

Dear reader, contemplate this verse and let it fill your heart with awe and love for your Creator. The same Allah who fashioned the angels with their magnificent wings, who spread out the heavens above you, and who laid out the earth beneath your feet — this same Allah is your Lord, your Sustainer, and your Protector. He did not create you without purpose, nor did He leave you without guidance.

When you witness the beauty of a bird soaring through the sky, remember that its Creator is the One who also created angels with wings beyond your imagination. When you marvel at the vastness of the universe, remember that its Originator is the One who holds all power and authority. And when you feel weak or incapable, remember that you worship the One who is over all things competent — He can change your situation, answer your prayers, and grant you success in ways you never expected.

This verse invites you to begin your journey with praise — al-ḥamdu lillāh — for gratitude is the key that opens the doors of Allah's blessings. When you acknowledge His favors, He increases them. When you praise Him for His perfection, He draws closer to you. And when you recognize His absolute power, your heart finds peace in knowing that your affairs are in the hands of the Most Capable.

So let your tongue be moist with the remembrance of Allah, let your heart be filled with gratitude for His countless blessings, and let your life be a living testimony to the praise of the One who created you, sustains you, and will one day bring you back to Him. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent — and that includes transforming your life, forgiving your sins, and guiding your heart to the straight path.
