Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fuqara' (الْفُقَرَاءُ): The needy, the utterly dependent, those in absolute need.
- Al-Ghaniyy (الْغَنِيُّ): The Self-Sufficient, the One free of all need.
- Al-Hamid (الْحَمِيدُ): The Praiseworthy, the One deserving all praise.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O mankind! Allah addresses all of humanity here—believers and non-believers alike—to establish a fundamental truth about our existence. You are, in every moment and in every aspect of your being, utterly dependent upon Allah. You need Him for your very breath, for the beating of your heart, for the food that sustains you, for the air you breathe, for guidance in your affairs, and for every single blessing you enjoy. You cannot do without Him even for the blink of an eye. Your poverty before Him is absolute and permanent—you are poor by nature, and He is rich by nature.
And Allah, in contrast, is Al-Ghaniyy—the Self-Sufficient. He does not need you, nor your worship, nor your obedience. He is not benefited by your faith nor harmed by your disbelief. He stands in need of nothing from any of His creation. Yet, in His infinite mercy, He is Al-Hamid—the Praiseworthy—worthy of all praise in His essence, His names, and His attributes. He is praised for His perfect wisdom, His boundless mercy, and His exquisite craftsmanship in creation. Every blessing you possess flows from Him alone, and therefore all praise and gratitude belong to Him in every circumstance.
This verse carries a profound and liberating message: your need for Allah is not a weakness to be ashamed of—it is your very nature. The moment you recognize your need for Him and turn to Him in humility, you align yourself with the truth of your existence. And the One you turn to is not a needy deity who requires your worship for His own benefit; rather, He is the Generous Lord who loves to give, who delights in answering the calls of His servants, and who has promised that when you draw near to Him, He draws even nearer to you.
So, dear reader, embrace your poverty before Allah. Let it be the bridge that connects you to the richest treasure of all—His love, His mercy, and His eternal pleasure. For the one who truly knows his need for Allah has found the key to every door of goodness, and the one who turns away in false self-sufficiency has cut himself off from the very source of all existence. Come to Him with your needs, your weaknesses, and your brokenness—for He is Al-Ghaniyy who enriches the poor, and Al-Hamid who turns your humble supplication into a cause for His praise and your elevation.
