Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Zill (الظل): Shade, coolness, and protection from heat — here referring to Paradise.
- Al-Harur (الحرور): The scorching, burning wind or intense heat — here referring to Hellfire.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the series of contrasts that Allah presents to illustrate the profound difference between truth and falsehood, belief and disbelief. Just as shade and scorching heat can never be equal in their effect and comfort, so too are Paradise and Hellfire utterly incomparable in what they offer. The shade of Paradise brings eternal coolness, peace, and delight, while the scorching heat of Hellfire brings unbearable torment and anguish.
Allah uses these vivid, tangible images from our daily experience to draw our minds toward the greater, unseen realities. If we naturally prefer cool shade over burning heat in this world, how much more should we strive for the eternal shade of Paradise and flee from the relentless heat of Hellfire? This comparison awakens the heart to make the right choice — to follow the path of guidance that leads to everlasting bliss, and to abandon the path of misguidance that leads to everlasting regret.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, Allah is not merely informing us of a fact — He is lovingly warning us and guiding us. He knows that we all seek comfort and happiness, so He points us to the ultimate comfort: Paradise, where there is no heat, no pain, no sorrow. And He warns us of the opposite: Hellfire, whose heat is beyond anything we can imagine in this world.
Let this verse be a turning point in your life. Every time you feel the relief of shade on a hot day, remember the shade of Paradise and ask Allah for it. Every time you feel the discomfort of heat, remember the heat of Hellfire and seek Allah’s protection from it. The choice is yours, and the path is clear. Allah has sent His Messenger with the truth, and He has made the signs plain so that no one has an excuse. Do not let your heart be like the dead in their graves — unable to hear the call of truth. Open your heart, respond to your Lord, and you will find a shade that never ends and a coolness that never fades.
