Surah Fatir — Verse 20

In this verse, Allah draws a powerful comparison to illustrate the fundamental difference between two opposing realities. Just as darkness and light can never be equal—no matter how one tries to compare them—so too can disbelief and faith never be placed on the same level. The "darknesses" mentioned here are not merely physical; they symbolize the spiritual darkness of shirk (associating partners with Allah), ignorance of the truth, and the blindness of a heart that rejects divine guidance. In contrast, the "light" represents the radiant illumination of iman (faith), the clarity of monotheism, and the inner vision that comes from following the path of Allah.

This verse is part of a series of comparisons in the same chapter, where Allah contrasts the blind person with the seeing one, the shadows with the scorching heat, and the living with the dead. All of these examples serve a single purpose: to make it unmistakably clear that truth and falsehood are not equal, and that a person of faith is not like a person of disbelief in the sight of Allah. Allah says in another verse: "Allah is the Protector of those who have faith; He brings them out of darkness into light" (2:257). So do not despair if you feel surrounded by darkness—whether it is the darkness of sin, confusion, or worldly distractions. Turn to Allah, and He will guide you step by step into the light. The Qur'an is that light, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to lead humanity out of the shadows of ignorance into the brightness of truth. Embrace this light today, and you will see how it transforms your vision, your heart, and your entire existence. The choice is yours: remain in the darkness of falsehood, or step forward into the everlasting light of faith.
