Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ahya (الأحياء): The living — here referring to the believers whose hearts are alive with faith and guidance.
- Al-Amwat (الأموات): The dead — here referring to the disbelievers whose hearts are dead due to their rejection of truth.
- Yusmi' (يُسْمِع): To make hear — meaning to grant the ability to hear with understanding and acceptance.
- Man fi al-qubur (مَن فِي الْقُبُور): Those in the graves — a metaphor for the disbelievers who are like the dead buried in tombs, unable to hear or respond.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most Wise, draws a profound comparison in this verse to clarify the great difference between the believers and the disbelievers. Just as the living and the dead are not equal, so too are the believers — whose hearts are alive with faith, remembrance of Allah, and love of truth — not equal to the disbelievers — whose hearts are dead, sealed with arrogance and denial. Similarly, darkness and light, shade and scorching heat, are not equal; nor are the blind and the seeing. These contrasts are not merely physical but carry deep spiritual meaning: the believer sees the truth and follows it, while the disbeliever remains blind and lost.
Allah then clarifies that He alone grants true guidance: He makes hear — with the hearing of understanding and acceptance — whom He wills. This is a mercy from Him, for He knows who is sincere in seeking the truth. As for you, O Messenger, you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make those in their graves respond to your call. In the same way, you cannot force the disbelievers to accept faith, for their hearts are like dead hearts, sealed against guidance. Your role, dear Prophet, is only to warn them of Allah's punishment and to deliver the message clearly.
This verse carries a beautiful reminder for all of us: the gift of faith is the greatest blessing, for it brings life to the heart. Let us cherish this light, seek it sincerely, and never take it for granted. And let us remember that guidance is in Allah's Hands alone — so we should turn to Him constantly, begging Him to keep our hearts alive with faith until we meet Him.
Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us the value of a living heart! A heart that beats with faith is a heart that finds peace, purpose, and hope. It is never too late to revive your heart — turn to Allah in sincere repentance, read His Book with reflection, and surround yourself with righteous company. And when you see others who are far from the truth, do not despair; your duty is to convey with kindness and wisdom, while the outcome rests with Allah, the Most Merciful, who opens hearts as He wills. May He make us among the living in heart and the guided in deed.
