Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Thumma akhathtu" (Then I seized): Means I took them with force and punishment.
- "Nakeer" (My disapproval/denial): Refers to Allah's severe punishment and His rejection of their deeds, which manifested as a terrible chastisement.
Explanation of the Verse:
Despite the clear signs, the miracles of the messengers, and the repeated warnings, those who disbelieved persisted in their rejection of Allah and His messengers. They did not believe in what was brought to them from Allah, nor did they heed the truth that was presented to them. So Allah seized them with various forms of punishment and destruction, just as He had seized the nations before them who had also rejected their prophets.
The verse calls upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and every reader to reflect: "How was My disapproval?" — meaning, how severe and terrible was the punishment that befell them? It was a punishment that left no one behind, a destruction that served as a lesson for all who came after. Their wealth, their power, and their numbers could not protect them from Allah's wrath when His decree came to pass.
This is a profound reminder that Allah's punishment is not merely a verbal rejection, but a tangible, overwhelming reality that strikes down the arrogant and the defiant. The question posed in the verse is rhetorical, inviting the mind to contemplate the fate of those who opposed Allah — from the people of Noah, to 'Ad, to Thamud, to Pharaoh — all were destroyed, and their remnants stand as signs for humanity.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse is a call to wake up from heedlessness. It tells us that Allah is patient, but when His punishment comes, it is decisive and unmatched. Yet, at the same time, it is a message of hope for the believers: Allah defends those who believe, and His victory is near. So do not be deceived by the temporary success of those who reject the truth, for their end is destruction, while the end of the righteous is eternal bliss. Let this verse strengthen your faith, increase your gratitude for being guided to Islam, and inspire you to call others to the path of truth with wisdom and kindness — before the punishment comes to those who refuse to listen. Indeed, Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance remains open until the final hour.
