Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, miracle, or clear evidence demonstrating the truth of the Prophet’s message.
  • Yastaskhirūn (يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ): They mock, ridicule, or scoff excessively — derived from *sukhriyah* (mockery), with the *istifʿāl* form indicating exaggeration and intensity in their derision.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the disbelievers witness a clear sign or miracle that proves the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — such as the splitting of the moon, the Qur’an’s unmatched eloquence, or other evidences of his prophethood — they do not respond with reflection or humility. Instead, they intensify their mockery and ridicule, turning the sign into an object of jest and amusement. Their reaction is not born of genuine doubt, but of arrogance and stubborn refusal to accept the truth, as they seek to undermine the Prophet’s mission by belittling what they cannot refute.

This verse exposes the psychological state of those who reject faith: when confronted with undeniable proof, they resort to sarcasm as a defense mechanism, hoping to dismiss the truth without engaging with it. Yet, their mockery only reveals their own weakness, for if the signs were truly insignificant, they would not feel compelled to scoff at them. The believer, in contrast, sees in every sign a reminder of Allah’s power and wisdom, and responds with gratitude and submission.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this scene: the same sun rises over the believer and the disbeliever, the same rain revives the earth, and the same Qur’an is recited — yet hearts differ. The disbeliever sees a miracle and laughs; the believer sees the same miracle and weeps in awe. Where does your heart stand? Do you rush to mock what you do not understand, or do you pause to reflect on the signs that surround you every moment? The Qur’an is not a book to be ridiculed; it is a light to be followed, a mercy to be embraced. Open your heart, and you will find that every sign — from the vastness of the heavens to the precision of your own breath — is an invitation to know your Creator. Do not let arrogance veil your vision, for the same mockery that filled the hearts of past nations only hastened their ruin, while those who humbled themselves found peace and success in this life and the next.

But you wonder, while they mock,
And when they are reminded, they remember not.
And when they see a sign, they ridicule
And say, "This is not but obvious magic.
When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
