Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Dhukkirū (ذُكِّرُوا): They are reminded, admonished, or given a reminder of something they have forgotten or neglected.
  • Lā yadhkurūn (لَا يَذْكُرُونَ): They do not remember, take heed, or pay attention; they fail to reflect or be moved by the reminder.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah describes the state of the disbelievers when they are reminded of the truth — whether through the Qur’an, the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), or any sincere admonition. When they are reminded of what they have forgotten or neglected — such as the Oneness of Allah, the reality of the Hereafter, or the consequences of their deeds — they do not benefit from that reminder. They neither reflect upon it nor let it penetrate their hearts. Instead, they turn away, as if they have heard nothing at all.

This is a manifestation of their hardened hearts and their stubbornness in rejecting guidance. The reminder reaches their ears, but it does not reach their minds or souls, because they have closed the doors of understanding and chosen heedlessness over contemplation. They are not merely forgetful — they actively refuse to remember, and they resist every call to wakefulness.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: the Qur’an is a living reminder, sent by the Most Merciful to awaken hearts from the slumber of negligence. How many of us hear the verses of Allah every day, yet remain unmoved? How many of us are reminded of our duties, yet continue in heedlessness? This verse is not only about the disbelievers of the past — it is a mirror for every soul. Let it be a gentle warning to you: when you are reminded of Allah, do not let your heart be like stone. Open it, soften it, and let the light of the reminder guide you. For the one who remembers Allah in this life will find Allah’s mercy and reward in the Hereafter. Do not be among those who hear the truth but walk away empty-handed. Be among those who, when reminded, remember — and are transformed.

📜 Verse 11-15 — As-Saffat

Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.
But you wonder, while they mock,
And when they are reminded, they remember not.
And when they see a sign, they ridicule
And say, "This is not but obvious magic.
