Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- "Fa-innakum" (فَإِنَّكُمْ): "Then indeed you" — addressing the polytheists of Quraysh and all who associate partners with Allah.
- "Wa mā ta'budūn" (وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ): "And what you worship" — referring to the idols and false deities they worshipped besides Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of a larger discourse in which Allah addresses the polytheists who denied the resurrection and mocked the Prophet ﷺ and the believers. Here, Allah says: "Then indeed you, O polytheists, and whatever you worship besides Allah — idols, stones, or false gods — you are not able to mislead anyone away from the truth except those whom Allah has decreed will enter the blazing Fire due to their own disbelief, injustice, and stubbornness."
The verse emphasizes that neither the polytheists nor their idols possess any real power to guide or mislead people. True guidance and misguidance are entirely in Allah's hands. The idols they worship are helpless — they cannot benefit or harm anyone, nor can they influence the hearts of people. The only ones who follow the polytheists are those whose fate has already been sealed by Allah's perfect justice — those who choose disbelief and oppression over truth and righteousness.
This is a profound reassurance for the believers: the plots of the disbelievers and the allure of their false gods are utterly powerless against the will of Allah. No matter how many people are deceived by falsehood, the truth remains victorious, and the believers should not fear the numbers or strength of their opponents.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a beautiful and comforting message for every Muslim. It reminds us that our faith is not threatened by the falsehood around us — no idol, no ideology, no system of disbelief can turn a sincere heart away from Allah unless that person themselves chooses to reject the truth. Your salvation is in your own hands, guided by Allah's mercy. So hold firm to your faith, trust in Allah's decree, and know that the falsehood you see — no matter how loud or powerful it appears — is ultimately weak and doomed. The believers are the true winners, for they rely on the Almighty, while the disbelievers rely on that which cannot even protect itself. Let this verse strengthen your heart and increase your reliance on Allah alone.
