Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿIbād Allah (عِبَادَ اللَّهِ): The servants of Allah, those who worship Him alone.
  • Al-Mukhlaṣīn (الْمُخْلَصِينَ): Those who have been purified and chosen by Allah, sincere in their faith and devotion, protected from any deviation or false attribution.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as an exception to what was mentioned before it, where the polytheists and deniers described Allah in ways that do not befit His majesty — claiming, for instance, that He has partners, offspring, or associates in His divinity. Such descriptions are utterly false and arise from ignorance and misguidance.

However, the sincere servants of Allah — those whom Allah has purified and chosen for His worship, and who have devoted themselves wholly to Him — are entirely different. They do not describe Allah except with what befits His grandeur and perfection. They affirm His beautiful names and lofty attributes, declaring Him free from any defect, deficiency, or resemblance to His creation. They know that He is One, Self-Sufficient, without partner, without equal, and without offspring. Their tongues utter only truth about their Lord, and their hearts are filled with reverence and awe for Him.

These are the people whom Allah has honored with sincerity (ikhlāṣ), and because of that sincerity, their words, beliefs, and worship are sound. They are the ones who will be saved from the punishment mentioned in the preceding verses, for they did not fall into the error of describing Allah with falsehood.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound and beautiful message for every believer: sincerity toward Allah is the key that unlocks correct knowledge of Him and protection from deviation. When your heart is pure and your intention is solely for Allah, you will naturally speak of Him with the respect and reverence He deserves. Your faith becomes a shield against every false idea and corrupt belief.

Dear reader, strive to be among the mukhlaṣīn — those whom Allah has purified. How? By purifying your intention in every act of worship, by seeking knowledge of Allah through His Book and the authentic teachings of His Messenger ﷺ, and by constantly asking Allah to grant you sincerity. When Allah chooses you for His sincere service, He will guide your heart, protect your faith, and grant you a life of tranquility — both in this world and in the Hereafter. Let this verse be a reminder that the highest honor is to be counted among the sincere servants of Allah, for they are the ones who truly know their Lord and describe Him as He deserves.

And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].
159سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin].
161فَإِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ
So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,
