Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَوَلَّ (Tawalla): Turn away from, leave them alone, withdraw from engaging with them.
- حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ (Hatta heen): Until a specified time, until an appointed moment, until God's decree comes to pass.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a divine command of profound wisdom and mercy. After the Prophet had delivered the message with patience and perseverance, and after the disbelievers persisted in their stubborn denial and mockery, Allah instructs him to turn away from them — not out of defeat or despair, but as a strategic withdrawal that leaves the matter entirely in God's hands.
The command "turn away from them until a time" carries a dual meaning. First, it is a release for the Prophet from the emotional burden of their rejection — he is told to disengage, to stop exhausting himself in futile argument with those who have sealed their hearts against the truth. Second, it is a solemn warning to the disbelievers: their respite is limited, and a time has been appointed when they will face the consequences of their actions. The "time" (heen) is deliberately unspecified, keeping them in a state of anticipation and reminding them that divine justice is certain, though its timing remains known only to Allah.
This verse also echoes a recurring theme in the Qur'an — that the messengers are not responsible for forcing belief upon people; their duty is only to convey the message clearly. When a people have been given ample opportunity to reflect and still choose falsehood, the believer's role shifts from active engagement to patient detachment, trusting that Allah's wisdom will unfold in His perfect time.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in dealing with those who reject the truth. As a Muslim, you are not called to endlessly argue or force your beliefs on others. You are called to convey with kindness, then to entrust the outcome to Allah. This frees your heart from anxiety and frustration, for you know that guidance comes from Allah alone.
It also reminds us that no one who turns away from the truth will be left unchecked forever. The "appointed time" may be near or far, but it is certain. So let this verse strengthen your patience, purify your intentions, and deepen your reliance on Allah. And if you find yourself facing rejection or mockery for your faith, remember: turn away with dignity, keep your heart connected to your Lord, and wait with confidence — for the promise of Allah is true, and His justice is never delayed without purpose.
