Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Lā ilāha illā Allāh (لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ): "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" — the declaration of pure monotheism (Tawḥīd).
- Yastakbirūn (يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ): They show arrogance, pride, and haughtiness — refusing to submit out of self-importance.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse unveils the deep-rooted condition of the polytheists in their worldly life. Whenever they were called to the pure, liberating truth of *Lā ilāha illā Allāh* — the very foundation of Islam that frees the heart from servitude to anything other than Allah — and were invited to act upon its implications by abandoning all that contradicts it, they responded with arrogance and disdain. They did not merely reject the call; they looked down upon it and upon the one who brought it, swelling with pride and refusing to bow their necks to the truth. Their hearts were too full of self-importance to accept that a human being, like them, could deliver such a decisive message, and their attachment to the ways of their forefathers made submission feel like defeat. Yet this arrogance was not a sign of strength — it was a veil that blinded them from the very purpose of their existence.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: how strange is the arrogance of a servant before his own Creator! The One who formed you from a drop of fluid, who gave you sight and hearing, who sustains you every moment — how could you turn away from His call with pride? The words *Lā ilāha illā Allāh* are not a burden; they are the key to your freedom. They release you from the chains of false gods — whether they be desires, status, wealth, or the opinions of others — and connect you to the Almighty, the Most Merciful. Do not let arrogance, even for a moment, block your path to eternal success. Humble yourself before Allah, and you will find that He raises your rank in ways you never imagined. The proud ones of history have perished, but the humble believers live on in the hearts of humanity and in the gardens of Paradise. Embrace this beautiful declaration today, and let it transform your heart, for it is the very essence of salvation.
