Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Wahy (الوحي): The secret and swift conveyance of divine knowledge and guidance to a chosen Prophet, often through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril), peace be upon him.
- Al-Asbat (الأسباط): The Prophets who descended from the twelve tribes of the Children of Israel, the sons of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him.
- Az-Zabur (الزبور): The holy scripture revealed to Prophet Dawud (David), peace be upon him, containing hymns, praises, and divine wisdom.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O noble Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), Allah addresses you with a profound reassurance: "Indeed, We have revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the Prophets after him." This verse is a direct response to the People of the Book who questioned your prophethood, and it affirms that you are not an innovation among the Messengers—rather, you stand in the blessed lineage of divine revelation that began with Adam and continued through the ages.
Allah then enumerates a selection of His chosen Messengers to emphasize the unity of their message and the continuity of His guidance: He revealed to Ibrahim (Abraham), the father of monotheism; to his sons Isma'il (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac); to Ya'qub (Jacob) and his descendants, the Asbat—the Prophets raised among the twelve tribes of Israel; to 'Isa (Jesus), the Messiah; to Ayyub (Job), the epitome of patience; to Yunus (Jonah), who was saved from the darkness of the whale; to Harun (Aaron), the eloquent spokesman and brother of Musa (Moses); and to Sulayman (Solomon), the king and Prophet of unmatched wisdom.
And to Dawud (David), Allah granted the Zabur—a scripture of psalms and divine praises that echoed the glory of the Almighty. This mention of the Zabur alongside the other revelations highlights that every Prophet was given what suited his time and people, yet all carried the same core truth: "Worship Allah alone and submit to His will."
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
This verse is a golden thread connecting you, dear reader, to the unbroken chain of Prophets. It tells you that Islam is not a new religion—it is the completion and confirmation of the very message brought by Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and all the Prophets (peace be upon them all). When you believe in Muhammad (peace be upon him), you are honoring all of them; when you follow the Qur'an, you are following the final and most comprehensive revelation that Allah Himself protected from any alteration.
Let this fill your heart with pride and certainty: you belong to a faith that Allah Himself established and guarded through every era. The same Allah who spoke to Moses, blessed David with the Zabur, and guided Jesus—He has now given you the Qur'an, a living miracle that remains unchanged to this very day. Embrace it, recite it, and live by it, for it is the ultimate mercy and the clearest path to eternal success. And know that the Prophets are your brothers in faith, waiting to intercede for those who sincerely followed their footsteps.
