Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qasasnāhum (قَصَصْنَاهُمْ): We have narrated to you their stories and news.
  • Taklīman (تَكْلِيمًا): A true, direct speech — a verbal noun emphasizing the reality of Allah's speaking to Musa.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah informs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that He sent many messengers throughout history. Some of them — like Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and others — He narrated their stories in the Qur'an for great wisdom: to teach, guide, and console the believers. But there were also other messengers whose names and stories He did not reveal to the Prophet, and their mention was withheld by divine wisdom known only to Allah. This teaches us that the number of prophets is greater than what we know, and that Allah's wisdom in revealing some stories and concealing others is perfect.

Then comes a special honor: "And Allah spoke to Musa with [direct] speech." This is a unique distinction granted to Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) — that Allah addressed him directly, without any intermediary or angel, in a manner befitting His majesty. This verse firmly establishes the attribute of Speech (Kalām) for Allah — a real, true speech, not a created sound or a metaphor. It refutes those who claim Allah does not speak, and it affirms that His speech is an eternal attribute that suits His glory.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. First, it reminds us of the immense mercy of Allah — that He did not leave humanity without guidance, but sent messengers one after another across time, each carrying the same core message: worship Allah alone. Second, it teaches us to trust Allah's wisdom even when we do not know everything — just as He concealed the stories of some prophets, He conceals many wisdoms from us in our daily lives, yet all is for our good. Third, the honor given to Musa reminds us that Allah elevates whom He wills and chooses His messengers for special distinctions — and the greatest honor of all is to be close to Allah through His speech. For us, the Qur'an is Allah's speech that we can recite, ponder, and live by every day. Let us cherish this divine gift, for through it, Allah still speaks to us — guiding us to the straight path and the eternal success of Paradise.

📜 Verse 162-166 — An-Nisa

But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer [especially] and the givers of zakah and the believers in Allah and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And we revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].
And [We sent] messengers about whom We have related [their stories] to you before and messengers about whom We have not related to you. And Allah spoke to Moses with [direct] speech.
[We sent] messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
But Allah bears witness to that which He has revealed to you. He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness [as well]. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.
