Key Words and Meanings:

  • Maqālīd (مَقَالِيدُ): The keys or controls; the means of access and disposal over something. It signifies full authority and mastery.
  • Yabsuṭu (يَبْسُطُ): He expands, widens, or grants abundantly.
  • Yaqdiru (يَقْدِرُ): He restricts, narrows, or measures out sparingly.
  • Alīm (عَلِيم): All-Knowing; His knowledge encompasses everything, hidden and apparent.

Explanation of the Verse:

To Allah alone belong the keys of the heavens and the earth—the treasures of provision, mercy, and all affairs of creation are under His absolute control. No one shares this authority with Him, and no door of sustenance or blessing opens except by His will. He expands the provision for whom He wills among His servants, as a test of gratitude—will they thank Him or become arrogant? And He restricts it for whom He wills, as a trial of patience—will they remain steadfast or complain against His decree? In both cases, His choice is rooted in perfect wisdom and justice. Indeed, He is All-Knowing of everything; nothing escapes His knowledge, and He grants or withholds according to what serves the true welfare of His servants, even if the wisdom behind it is hidden from their sight.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O beloved reader, pause and contemplate this magnificent truth: the keys to all that exists—from the rain that falls from the sky to the provisions that reach your table—are in the Hands of the Most Merciful. When you find yourself in ease and abundance, let it be a moment of gratitude that draws you closer to your Lord. When you face hardship and scarcity, let it be a moment of patience that elevates your rank with Him. For He, the All-Knowing, knows what you do not know: that sometimes abundance is a test, and sometimes restriction is a mercy in disguise. So turn to Him with a humble heart, for the One who holds the keys of the heavens and the earth is nearer to you than your own jugular vein, and His wisdom is beyond all measure. Trust Him, rely on Him, and you will find peace that surpasses all understanding.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Ash-Shura

And in anything over which you disagree - its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah. [Say], "That is Allah, my Lord; upon Him I have relied, and to Him I turn back."
[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. He extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is, of all things, Knowing.
He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allah is that to which you invite them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].
And they did not become divided until after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord [postponing the penalty] until a specified time, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, those who were granted inheritance of the Scripture after them are, concerning it, in disquieting doubt.
